The Second Annual Yonex Eastman Open was hosted by the Whitemouth, St. Pierre and Lac du Bonnet Badminton Clubs this past weekend at Steinbach Regional Secondary School. This years tournament saw a drastic increase in the number of
participants from the previous year with 81 athletes, primarily from the Eastman Region, Kenora, and St. Jean Baptiste, competing in U14, U16, U19, and Open categories.
Congratulations to all the winners, especially Kinsley Sorenson (Whitemouth, U16) and Chris Berard (St. Pierre, Open) who were triple crown winners.
The tournament was also the identification camp for the Eastman Training Squad that will be training in preparation for the Eastman Qualifier and the 2014 Manitoba Winter Games. With many strong players competing in all junior categories, there is a lot of potential for the Eastman Team at the upcoming games. Those athletes who were identified by the Eastman coaching staff will be contacted over the next few weeks.

This tournament will also serve as the Athlete Identifications for Team Eastman in the 2014 Manitoba Winter Games. Team Eastman's coaches, Mike Carter and Melanie Cure, as well as Team Manager Marj Niemi will be scouting athletes born 1996 or later, and 2000 or later to join the Team Eastman Training Squad. These athletes will have the opportunity to train together throughout the summer and fall of 2013 in preparations for the final tryouts. The Eastman Open is part of MBA's Rural Initiative to create more opportunities, recognize progress and develop relationships in Rural Manitoba.
